Overview

Asia City Online takes great care of, and respects, your privacy and your data. This policy is intended to make you aware of how we acquire your information as you sign up for our products and services, how we manage it, and how we will (and will not) use it to provide you with great new products, special deals, offers, services, contests, party invitations, and more.  We adhere to the regulations of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance laws of Hong Kong as well as industry best practices.  We will not automatically add you to any email list, only those you wish to join. You can unsubscribe from any list at any time.

Access to Site Content and Services

Most of the content and services offered through websites operated by Asia City Online are freely accessible to all users.  However, the following services require users to either become Registered Members of our sites or provide some personal information:

You must become a Registered Member of the site if you wish to:

  • Post a comment in the forums or create a forum topic
  • Participate in members-only giveaways
  • Receive a free newsletter
  • Download a guide
  • Make a purchase from the online Store
  • Subscribe to a PDF e-book of our print magazine issue
  • Receive notices of special offers, promotions and deals from selected advertisers

Registered Members are required to provide:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • A valid email address
  • Gender
  • Birth date
  • Interests

In addition, Registered Members may choose to provide:

  • Mobile phone number
  • Country of origin
  • Country of residence
  • Duration in country of residence
  • Monthly income
  • Occupation

In order to complete a purchase (including free guide download) from the Store, Registered Members are also required to provide: phone number, billing and shipping addresses and credit card information.

Non-members may take part in the following activities, but may be asked to provide some personal information in order to do so:

  • Enter a competition/giveaway/promotion
  • Get an invitation to attend an event
  • Complete an online survey
  • View our tablet products

This personal information may include first name, last name, email address, gender, date of birth, interests, or other information related to a particular promotion or event.  This information may be shared with companies or promoters involved in organizing the activity, but it will not be used for marketing purposes without your permission.

In either case, Asia City Online will not automatically add you into any list.  You will only become part of a list if you opt in by choosing to receive that product from us.

From time to time, we may communicate to Registered Members about Asia City Online products or services that they have not opted in to, and encourage them to do so.  This may also apply to new products that are launched by Asia City Online.

Non-members who take part in one of the above online activities, or who have taken part in an Asia City offline event, will receive an email within 14 days acknowledging their activity, and providing opportunity for them to become a Registered Member.
 
Registered Members

Please note that Registered Members agree to the following:

  • You may never use another's account without permission.
  • When creating your account, you must provide accurate and complete information.
  • If you take part in activities such as competitions, events, promotions or surveys on this website, your information may be shared with promoters of the competition or to others that are involved in the organisation of the competition or the prize-giving.
  • You are solely responsible for the activity that occurs on your account, and you must keep your account password secure.
  • You must notify Asia City Online immediately of any breach of security or unauthorized use of your account.
  • Although Asia City Online will not be liable for your losses caused by any unauthorized use of your account, you may be liable for the losses of Asia City Online or others due to such unauthorized use.
  • If you sign up to receive any of our online products (such as, but not limited to, newsletters, PDF e-books, or promotional emailers), you will become part of that email list and remain on it until you unsubscribe from it.
  • Each online product has its own list.  You may choose to subscribe to or unsubscribe from any list at any time by going to the “Manage My Account” section at the bottom of the email that has been sent to you.
  • If you provide mobile phone information, either Asia City or its Privilege partners may send SMS messages to you.
  • Asia City Online may use your personal information for auditing, research and analysis to operate and improve Asia City Online technologies and services.
  • We may combine personal information collected from you with information from other Asia City Online services or third parties to provide a better user experience, including customizing content for you or informing you of products or services that are relevant to your stated interests.
  • We may share information with third parties in limited circumstances, including when complying with legal process, preventing fraud or imminent harm, and ensuring the security of our network and services.
  • Asia City Online may also share profile information and aggregate usage information in a non-personally identifiable manner to advertisers and other third parties in order to accurately explain the demographic profile of site users, and to present to potential advertisers more targeted advertising, products and services.
  • As a matter of policy, except where you are expressly informed otherwise, we do not sell, rent, share, trade or give away personal information of our Registered Members.
  • We will never disclose information that will be used to personally identify you. In the event that we use third parties to assist us in processing your personal information, we require that they comply with our Privacy Policy and any other appropriate confidentiality and security measures.

Our Privileges List

Registered Members who join the Privileges email list will receive announcements, promotions, deals and offers from selected advertisers.  

In such cases, Asia City Online performs the email service on behalf of the advertiser; your account or personal information is not provided to the advertiser.  However, if you respond to an offer contained in a Privilege email, the advertiser may choose to market to you in accordance with the laws of the country in which you live.

Based on the personal information you provide, Asia City Online may select members of the Privileges email list for greater relevance to the advertiser (e.g., selecting those who said they are interested in Restaurants and Food for a dining offer).

Privilege List members who also provide mobile phone information may receive SMS messages from Privileges advertisers.

Registering with Facebook Connect

The Facebook Connect platform may be used to register for this site.  If you choose to use the Facebook Connect option then Facebook's terms and conditions, guidelines and privacy policies also apply to your use of this site. By registering for our site with Facebook Connect you allow us to have access to certain information from your Facebook profile (eg: Name, e-mail address, gender, birthdate and location). When you provide this information you help us personalize your experience on our site by providing exclusive content and being able to contact you with news and offers. This Privacy Policy applies to information collected by us through your Facebook Connect login.  Your activities on Facebook are covered by the Facebook privacy policy and the Facebook terms of use.

Our Emailing Technology

Asia City Online retains a third-party Vendor to provide its emailing services.  The Vendor hosts Asia City Online’s email lists on its own servers, and provides services and security which are industry standard.

Changes in Our Privacy Policy

If we change this Privacy Policy, we will post those changes on the Website so our users are always aware of what information we collect, how we use it, and under what circumstances, if any, we disclose it. If we are going to use users' personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time of collection we will notify users via email or by placing a prominent notice on the Website.

Public Forums
Please keep in mind that whenever you voluntarily disclose personal information online, for example on message boards, through e-mail, or in chat areas - that information can be collected and used by others. In short, by posting personal information online that is publicly accessible, you may receive unsolicited messages from other parties in return.
 
Online Store
We are committed to protecting the information we receive from you. Credit card numbers for purchases made on our online store are collected by PayPal on our behalf and their privacy policies can be viewed at Paypal Privacy Policy

Business Transfers
We are always seeking to improve our network of Web sites and our business. In accomplishing these objectives, we may buy or sell a company, or one or more of the companies in our corporate family may merge with or be acquired by another company. If we sell a business, we may transfer some or all of your information as a part of the sale in order that the service being provided to you may continue or for other business purposes.

Users of Asia City Online websites and digital products are also subject to the Terms of Service.
