Who can resist an aromatic broth with tender slices of beef and noodles?

[Updated Jul 18] Aside from Vietnamese coffee, the country's most popular export has got to be pho. Here's where to find the best ones in Singapore.

An An

This off shoot of Vietnamese restaurant Madam Saigon dishes out a mean bowl of pho and the menu's highlight has to be its special beef noodles ($9.90), which comes with beef balls and slices in a bowl of savory, clear soup. There are also other renditions of pho, like spicy beef and flower crab, and more options ranging from a barbecued lemongrass porkchop with salad, to bites such as vermicelli spring rolls and green mango salad. #01-455, Pasarbella @ Suntec City, 3 Temasek Blvd (North Wing). Open daily,10am-10pm.

Long Phung

The house special at this small stall in a corner of Joo Chiat is the pho dac biet, which comes with beef slices and beef noodles, and a generous amount of basil leaves and beansprouts. For those who like a spicy kick, don't be shy to top up on chilies. 159 Joo Chiat Rd. 64406959. Open daily, 12-10pm.

Mrs Pho

Beach Road is home to a pretty darn good pho stall. First of all, you'll probably be greeted by Vietnamese ladies manning the floor—always a good sign. Order the pho bo dac biet ($8.90), a generous bowl of beef brisket, beef balls and sliced beef in a robust broth. They're not skimpy with the additional toppings and sauces either, so load up on more fish sauce, limes or chilies. 349 Beach Rd. 6292 0018Open Mon-Sat, 11am-10pm.

An An

Nam Nam

The Les Amis Group gets casual with this Vietnamese-inspired noodle place. It's not the most authentic of the lot, but the broth is clean and MSG-free. Its minimalist wooden space has bowls filled with chicken and beef, including beef balls, beef shank, tendon and tripe (from $9). And you can also order an indulgent rendition of wagyu beef pho ($19.90). Just don't miss out on their sauces and extra ingredients. #B1-46/47, Raffles City Shopping Centre, 252 North Bridge Rd. 6336 0500. Open daily, 8am-9:30pm.

Pho4All

This place is great if you're looking for halal pho (from $8). Located in the Arab Street area, you'll get a decent bowl of beef pho that's served with steak, brisket, flank and meatballs. Plus, the condiments like beansprouts and basil are all refillable. 7 Jalan Pisang. Open Mon-Sat, 11am-3pm, 6-9pm.

NamNam Noodle Bar at Raffles City

Pho 99

Located in a cramped little shophouse space, this pho stall is popular amongst the CBD crowd. The beef pho, with thinly sliced beef and beef balls, is a standout (from $8.50). However, be prepared to wait if you're going at lunchtime. 57/58 Amoy St. 6410 9600. Open from Sun-Thurs, 11am-midnight and Fri-Sat, 11-4am.

Pho Hoa

There was a time when this pho chain dominated the Vietnamese noodle industry. Even if they've scaled down, the noodles here are still as comforting as they used to be. Here, you get huge portions filled with beef flank, steak, brisket, tripe and tendon in a heavily spiced (more clove-forward) broth (from $12.95). 18 Lorong Mambong, Holland Village. 6467 3662. Open daily, 11am-10pm.
